The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee turned the jail cell itself into a weapon of the freedom movement — "jail, no bail" at Rock Hill, the Freedom Riders filling Parchman's death row, the organizers beaten and jailed in McComb and Albany and Greenwood. As it moved from nonviolence to Black Power, its leaders faced sedition and riot prosecutions built specially for them, down to the life sentence of Imam Jamil Al-Amin — the former H. Rap Brown — in the case his supporters contest to this day. The events below trace that history.
