YOUNG LORDS
The Young Lords transformed from a Chicago street organization into the Puerto Rican counterpart of the Black Panther Party — occupying churches and hospitals to run breakfast programs and health clinics, forcing the city to collect East Harlem's garbage, and building a prison-rights movement after the death of Julio Roldán in the Tombs. Surveilled and infiltrated from the start, the organization produced arrests by the hundred and a political-prisoner tradition that connects the barrio's church occupations to the prison uprisings of the early 1970s.
