STUDENTS FOR A DEMOCRATIC SOCIETY
Students for a Democratic Society was the organizational heart of the 1960s New Left — from the Port Huron Statement's "participatory democracy" to the campus revolts of 1968. Its history of confrontation with the state runs from the first anti-Vietnam marches through the draft-resistance trials, the Columbia occupation, and the Chicago conspiracy case, until its 1969 collapse birthed the Weather Underground. The events below trace SDS and its prosecutions.
