The African People's Socialist Party — the core of the Uhuru Movement — was built by Omali Yeshitela, whose own political career began with a prison sentence for tearing down a racist mural in St. Petersburg's City Hall in 1966. A half century of organizing for reparations and African self-determination later, the elderly chairman and his movement returned to a federal courtroom in the "Uhuru 3" case, the government's first prosecution of Black liberationists as foreign agents.
