LOS MACHETEROS

Los Macheteros — the Ejército Popular Boricua, or Boricua Popular Army — took up the armed independence struggle inside Puerto Rico itself in 1976, under the leadership of the veteran clandestino Filiberto Ojeda Ríos. From the destruction of nine National Guard jets at Muñiz Air Base to the $7.1 million Wells Fargo robbery in Hartford — the money famously routed to the movement, with Robin Hood-style giveaways — the organization drew one of the largest FBI operations in history, the Hartford 15 prosecutions, and, in 2005, the killing of Ojeda Ríos in an FBI siege on the anniversary of the Grito de Lares. The events below trace that history and its prisoners.
