MAY 19TH COMMUNIST ORGANIZATION
The May 19th Communist Organization — named for the shared birthday of Malcolm X and Ho Chi Minh — was formed in 1978 by women veterans of the Weather Underground and Prairie Fire Organizing Committee who committed themselves to direct support of the Black Liberation Army and other Third-World revolutionary organizations. Its history runs from the 1979 liberation of Assata Shakur, through the 1981 Brink's robbery and the 1983–85 bombing campaign that reached the U.S. Capitol, to the Resistance Conspiracy case — and its imprisoned members, held in the experimental Lexington High Security Unit, became the center of the political-prisoner movement of the 1980s and 1990s.
