SYMBIONESE LIBERATION ARMY
The Symbionese Liberation Army was a small armed group that emerged from the Bay Area prison movement in 1973 and burned across the American front page for barely two years — the assassination of Oakland schools superintendent Marcus Foster, the kidnapping of Patricia Hearst, the televised Los Angeles shootout that killed six members — before its survivors were hunted down across three decades of trials ending only in the 2000s. Its prisoners, from Joe Remiro and Russell Little to Sara Jane Olson and the Opsahl-case defendants, span the entire afterlife of the 1970s underground. The events below trace that history.
