EARTH LIBERATION FRONT
The Earth Liberation Front was a name and a set of guidelines — economic sabotage against the machinery of ecological destruction, with all care to harm no life — adopted by autonomous cells whose arsons, from Vail to the Northwest timber industry, caused tens of millions in damage and no deaths. The government's answer, Operation Backfire and the terrorism enhancements of the Green Scare, produced the longest sentences ever given for property crimes committed in defense of the earth. The events below trace that history and its prisoners.
