COMMUNIST PARTY USA

No American organization has produced more political prisoners than the Communist Party USA. From the Palmer Raids that greeted its birth, through the criminal-syndicalism prosecutions of the 1920s and the insurrection case of Angelo Herndon, to the Smith Act and McCarran Act machinery that imprisoned its entire national and state leadership in the 1950s, the Party's century is a map of American political repression — and of the defense campaigns, from the ILD to the fight that ended in Yates v. United States, that finally broke the prosecutions. The events below trace that history.
