TIMOTHY LEARY PRISON ESCAPE
In September 1970 the Weather Underground helped the imprisoned LSD guru Timothy Leary escape from the California Men's Colony, where he was serving time on marijuana charges. Members smuggled him out and spirited him abroad; he ultimately reached Algeria, where Eldridge Cleaver's Black Panther International Section was based.
The escape, financed in part by a countercultural drug network, demonstrated the Weather Underground's links to the wider counterculture and its capacity for clandestine operations. Leary issued a militant communiqué on his release, though he and the Panthers soon fell out.
