PENTAGON BOMBING
On May 19, 1972 — a date chosen to mark the birthday of Ho Chi Minh — the Weather Underground bombed the Pentagon, planting a device in a fourth-floor restroom in protest of the renewed U.S. bombing of North Vietnam. As usual a warning preceded the blast, which flooded part of the building but caused no casualties.
Bombing the headquarters of the U.S. military was a high point of the group's campaign against the Vietnam War, and it embarrassed the government by exposing the vulnerability of even its most secure buildings.
