DAYS OF RAGE
In October 1969 the Weathermen staged the "Days of Rage" in Chicago, a series of confrontational demonstrations timed to the trial of the Chicago Eight. Expecting thousands, they drew only a few hundred, who charged through the streets of the Gold Coast smashing windows and battling police.
The action left many arrested and injured and alienated much of the broader movement, which saw it as reckless adventurism. But for the Weathermen it marked a decisive break from mass, nonviolent student organizing and set the group on the path toward clandestine armed struggle.
