FRAUNCES TAVERN BOMBING
On January 24, 1975, the FALN bombed Fraunces Tavern, a historic restaurant in Lower Manhattan, killing four people and injuring more than fifty. It was the deadliest attack of the group's campaign, and the FALN claimed responsibility in a communiqué tying the bombing to its demand for Puerto Rican independence.
The bombing shocked the public and made the FALN a national law-enforcement priority. It remains the single most controversial episode in the group's history and figured heavily in later debates over how its imprisoned members should be judged — as terrorists or as combatants in an anti-colonial struggle.
