CONTINUING POLITICAL-PRISONER CAMPAIGNS
Continuing Political-Prisoner Campaigns

From the 1980s through the 2010s, the FALN cases sat at the center of Puerto Rican independence and prisoner-support organizing. Campaigns for the release of Oscar López Rivera, Carlos Alberto Torres, Haydée Beltrán, and others framed them as political prisoners of a colonial relationship and became a rare point of unity across Puerto Rican politics.

The 1999 clemencies, the 2010 release of Carlos Alberto Torres, and the 2017 commutation of Oscar López Rivera were treated as major victories by that movement. The FALN prisoners' decades of incarceration — and the organizing around them — remain a defining chapter in the modern history of the Puerto Rican independence struggle.
