The decade underground ended in the fall of 1984. On November 4, FBI agents took Raymond Levasseur and Pat Gros, with their three daughters, near Deerfield, Ohio, and captured the Mannings' close comrades Jaan Laaman and Barbara Curzi with Richard Williams in Cleveland the same day; Tom and Carol Manning were caught in Norfolk, Virginia the following April. The seven adults — tried together as the "Ohio 7" — had raised eleven children underground, and the government's treatment of those children, interrogated and placed in custody as leverage, became a lasting scandal of the case.
In the 1986 Brooklyn federal trial the defendants were convicted of the bombings themselves, drawing sentences up to 53 years (Levasseur, Manning) and 45 years (Laaman, Williams), with lesser terms for Carol Manning and Curzi and probation-range outcomes for Gros — punishment the defense noted exceeded most contemporary sentences for violent crimes that killed.
