Over nearly a decade the network carried out roughly twenty bombings and attempted bombings across the Northeast under the Sam Melville–Jonathan Jackson and United Freedom Front names — IBM and Union Carbide offices for their South African operations; military recruiting stations, Navy and defense-contractor facilities for the wars in Central America; courthouses for the prison struggle. The actions were conducted at night with telephoned warnings, and communiqués — typed over the UFF's five-pointed star — laid out each target's corporate or military role.
The campaign injured almost no one across its span, a fact the defense would place at the center of the later trials; the government answered with one of the largest fugitive investigations of the era, BOSLUC, and years of grand juries that jailed supporters who refused to testify.
