JACKSON, MISSISSIPPI SHOOTOUT
On August 18, 1971, a combined force of Jackson police and FBI agents raided two RNA houses in Jackson, Mississippi, at dawn, using an armored vehicle and heavy weapons. A gun battle erupted; Jackson police officer William Skinner was killed and two other officers were wounded.
Eleven RNA members were arrested and charged. The raid, part of the FBI's broader campaign against Black nationalist organizations, effectively crushed the RNA's Mississippi project and initiated the prosecutions that would imprison much of its leadership.
