The Brigade's story continued inside the walls. Ed Mead co-founded Men Against Sexism at Walla Walla — the celebrated prisoner collective that broke the prison's rape economy — and from his cell built Prison Legal News with Paul Wright into the country's essential prisoners'-rights journal; he was released in 1993 after eighteen years. Rita Brown, released in 1987, spent the rest of her life in queer and prisoner-support organizing; Mark Cook, the Brigade member longest held, was finally paroled in 2000 after nearly a quarter century.
Because its members survived, organized, and wrote, the Brigade left an unusually complete record — memoirs, the Creating a Movement with Teeth documentary anthology, and decades of prisoner-support work that carried the Northwest prison movement's politics into the twenty-first century.
