ASSATA SHAKUR’S PRISON ESCAPE
On November 2, 1979, Assata Shakur escaped from the Clinton Correctional Facility for Women in New Jersey with the help of armed comrades linked to the Black Liberation Army and the May 19th Communist Organization, who entered the prison and spirited her away without a shot fired.
After years underground she surfaced in Cuba, which granted her political asylum in 1984; she has lived there ever since. Her escape and exile made her an enduring symbol of the era's Black liberation struggle — and a lasting object of official pursuit, as the U.S. government placed her on its Most Wanted Terrorists list in 2013 and repeatedly demanded her return.
