OAKLAND COMMUNITY SCHOOL
The Oakland Community School, which the Black Panther Party ran through the 1970s, was one of the party's longest-lived and most respected institutions. Growing out of the earlier Intercommunal Youth Institute, it offered free, high-quality education to community children, along with meals, health care, and transportation.
The school won wide acclaim — including recognition from the California legislature — for its innovative curriculum and its results with children the public schools had failed. It exemplified the party's later turn toward sustained community institutions and remained open into the early 1980s, outlasting much of the party's national structure.
