The campaign against the Atlanta Public Safety Training Center ('Cop City') produced the most aggressive use of state RICO and domestic-terrorism statutes against environmental and racial-justice organizers in U.S. history. Tortuguita was killed by Georgia state troopers on January 18, 2023; the 61 RICO defendants face decades-long sentences for forest-defense and bail-fund organizing.
