The 2014 Ferguson uprising after the police killing of Michael Brown, and the 2015 Baltimore uprising after Freddie Gray died in police custody, produced the first wave of Black Lives Matter prosecutions and an unprecedented military response to American protest. Several prominent Ferguson organizers — among them Darren Seals and DeAndre Joshua — were later found shot dead in burned cars in killings that remain unsolved.
