INDIGENOUS SOVEREIGNTY
Indigenous resistance to U.S. settler colonialism has produced political prisoners from the Wounded Knee occupation (1973), the Pine Ridge shootout (1975), and contemporary land defense at Standing Rock and Line 3. Leonard Peltier, the longest-serving Indigenous political prisoner in U.S. history, was finally released to home confinement in February 2025 after 49 years in federal custody.
