Biography

Daisy Bates was the president of the Arkansas NAACP and the mentor of the Little Rock Nine, arrested in November 1957 for the NAACP's refusal to hand over its membership lists under a new Little Rock city ordinance — part of Arkansas's drive to cripple the organization amid the Central High desegregation fight. She surrendered to police and was released on bond.
