Biography
The Rev. Joseph A. DeLaine was the AME minister who organized the Clarendon County, South Carolina school-desegregation petition that became part of Brown v. Board of Education. After his church was burned and nightriders fired on his home, he fired back and was charged with 'assault with intent to kill'; he fled the state, and New York's governor refused to extradite him on what supporters called a frame-up of a civil-rights leader.
