Biography

The Rev. A. Leon Lowry of Tampa was the Florida state president of the NAACP. In December 1959 the Florida Legislative Investigating Committee — the 'Johns Committee' — recommended that he be jailed for contempt for failing to appear before its segregation-era probe of the NAACP.
