Biography
Charles W. Baltimore Corporal of the 24th Infantry Regiment. Military policeman whose beating and arrest by Houston police on August 23, 1917 — and the false rumor that police had killed him — was the immediate catalyst for the soldiers' march. Pistol-whipped and shot at by police when he went to inquire about Pvt. Alonzo Edwards. Hanged at sunrise December 11, 1917. Conviction formally set aside by U.S. Army November 2023 (posthumous).
