Biography
Carlos Alberto Torres is a Puerto Rican nationalist linked to the FALN era of clandestine independence activity and to long-running debates about political imprisonment and anti-colonial resistance. He became widely known because he spent years as a fugitive and appeared on Federal Bureau of Investigation “Ten Most Wanted” list during the late 1970s.
Torres was captured on April 4, 1980, and later convicted of seditious conspiracy—described as conspiring to use force against the lawful authority of the United States—receiving a 78-year federal sentence. He served roughly 30 years and was granted parole in May 2010, leaving prison on July 26, 2010, and returning to Puerto Rico shortly afterward.
