Biography
Alicia Rodríguez is a Puerto Rican activist whose political outlook was shaped by community life in Chicago and by a developing commitment to Puerto Rican self-determination. Her activism is often described as rooted in a critique of colonialism and in solidarity with movements for Puerto Rican independence.
She was arrested on April 4, 1980, in Evanston and later convicted of seditious conspiracy and related federal charges connected to the FALN, receiving a 55-year sentence. In court proceedings, she and others described themselves as anti-colonial combatants and refused to participate on the grounds that they should be treated as prisoners of war. Rodríguez was released on September 10, 1999, after conditional clemency and later relocated to Puerto Rico.
