Biography

Larry Gossett was a Seattle Black Power and civil-rights activist who co-founded the University of Washington's Black Student Union after being radicalized as a VISTA volunteer in Harlem. On March 29, 1968 he co-led a sit-in at Seattle's Franklin High School (with Aaron Dixon and Carl Miller) protesting the treatment of Black students, and was arrested, convicted of unlawful assembly, and sentenced to six months in jail. The Washington Supreme Court later ordered a retrial and prosecutors declined to re-try the case, so the conviction was vacated. He went on to serve on the King County Council from 1994 to 2020.
