Biography
Charles Thomas "Tom" Smit (March 7, 1944 - May 10, 2018) was one of the Chicago 15. On May 25, 1969 the group entered Selective Service headquarters at 2355 West 63rd Street in Chicago, removed roughly 40,000 draft records, burned them behind the building, and waited to be arrested. His exact places of birth and death are unresolved.
He was indicted on June 3, 1969 on federal counts of destruction of government property, mutilation of records, interfering with the Selective Service System, and conspiracy.
HE DID NOT APPEAR FOR TRIAL ON MAY 5, 1970 AND HIS CASE WAS SEVERED. The sentences imposed on the eight defendants in the reported appeal, United States v. Cullen, therefore MUST NOT be attributed to him.
A contemporary report published on August 12, 1973 states that the FBI arrested him, then a 29-year-old fugitive, in Palo Alto, California. The exact day of that arrest and any subsequent judgment or sentence are unresolved, so no custody is recorded.
