Wilhelmina Jakes was a Florida A&M College student arrested with Carrie Patterson on May 26, 1956 — on a charge of 'placing themselves in a position to incite a riot' — for taking the only open bus seats, beside a white woman. Their arrest touched off the Tallahassee bus boycott.
