Biography

Septima Clark was the director of education at the Highlander Folk School, the interracial labor and civil-rights training center at Monteagle, Tennessee. She was arrested in the July 31, 1959 police raid on the school — on pretext liquor charges — part of a state campaign to shut down a place resented for its work on integration.
