Biography

Guy Carawan was the music director of the Highlander Folk School — the man who popularized 'We Shall Overcome' as the anthem of the civil-rights movement. He was arrested in the July 31, 1959 police raid on the interracial school on a pretext charge of drunkenness, part of the state's drive to close Highlander.
