Brown, a former Black Panther based in the Bay Area, became one of the most visible local defendants in the revived 1971 case and was part of the broader “San Francisco 8” group swept up in the 2007 arrests.

He was arrested in 2007 and initially faced serious charges tied to the 1971 killing. As courts and prosecutors narrowed the indictment and other defendants entered pleas, charges against Brown were dismissed in 2009.
