Biography
Michael Soussoudis was a Ghanaian intelligence officer whose relationship with Sharon Scranage was treated by U.S. authorities as a deliberate targeting operation aimed at extracting classified information. He was lured to a meeting in Virginia, arrested in 1985, and prosecuted under espionage statutes after U.S. officials alleged he had used the relationship to compromise intelligence assets and operations.
He received a 20-year sentence in a closed proceeding, but his incarceration in the United States was short-lived. Later in 1985 he was exchanged in a bilateral spy swap and returned to Ghana, where his arrival was widely publicized.
