Biography
Chuck Malone was a San Francisco-based Irish republican activist who became a long-running figure in U.S. investigations and prosecutions related to alleged IRA support. In the early 1970s, he was convicted in federal court for unlawfully exporting firearms from the United States to the United Kingdom, and the sentencing court imposed unusually sweeping probation restrictions aimed at cutting off his association with Irish republican-linked groups and venues.
Malone later faced another major federal prosecution connected to a sting operation alleging plans to supply weapons to the IRA. By the early 1990s he had served additional time in prison, and reporting at the time described him as having been released in 1993. His repeated prosecutions made him one of the most publicly recognized U.S.-based figures in the contentious debate over diaspora involvement in the Northern Ireland conflict.
