Biography
Marie Haydée Beltrán Torres is a Puerto Rican nationalist whose case is closely linked to the clandestine group Fuerzas Armadas de Liberación Nacional Puertorriqueña. She was convicted for the 1977 bombing of a Mobil Oil office building in New York that killed one person and injured others; prosecutors tied her to the attack through forensic evidence, and she rejected the legitimacy of the court proceedings, framing herself as a prisoner of war rather than a criminal defendant.
She was convicted in 1980 and sentenced to life imprisonment. After nearly three decades incarcerated, she was released on April 14, 2009.
