Biography
Martha Lee Shemeley was a Camden social worker, a former diocesan teacher, a Seton Hall psychology graduate and a published Catholic writer who lectured on the role of women in the church and on the "underground church". She was thirty-four at the Camden 28 indictment and the mother of a ten-year-old. She was severed from the main trial and her charges were dismissed after the May 1973 acquittals. Contemporary press used the spelling Shemeley; Shemely appears in secondary accounts. A genealogical record suggesting a birth in March 1936 under the maiden name Martha Lee Haley is a probable but unverified match, so it is noted here and not entered.
