Biography

Mexican-American youth and one of the twelve defendants convicted of murder or assault in the January 1943 Sleepy Lagoon mass trial, following the August 1942 death of José Díaz in Los Angeles County. The Sleepy Lagoon Defense Committee, with support from Hollywood progressives and the CIO, organized a national appeal. Convictions reversed October 1944 by the California District Court of Appeal.
