Biography

The Reverend John Newton Cross was an abolitionist pastor openly defiant of the Fugitive Slave Law, who publicized his Underground Railroad work in the antislavery newspaper The Western Citizen and built UGRR networks across Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, and Iowa. In 1843 he was arrested in Knox County, Illinois for transporting freedom seekers; the case was later dismissed.
