Biography
Edward Thompson Sheldon was an Underground Railroad operative in southwest Iowa. In February 1860 he and Newton Woodford were transporting four men (treated as freedom seekers) by covered wagon when a band of pro-slavery men, armed with a warrant, had them arrested for aiding an escape from slavery. Jailed at Glenwood, Iowa and brought to trial, they were acquitted; undeterred, Sheldon soon helped rescue the four men. He later served as a Union Army captain and settled in Colorado.
