Jacob M. Walter

Jacob M. Walter was a Mennonite conscientious objector from South Dakota imprisoned during World War I. Court-martialed for refusing military service, he was held at Fort Leavenworth. Sentenced to 25 years in prison, reduced to 1. (Documented in the Swarthmore College Peace Collection's World War I Conscientious Objectors database.) Archival note: registered for the draft on June 5, 1917 as a CO; classified as 1A; interviewed by the Special Bd. on Sept. 25, 1918 at Funston and Feb. 15, 1919 at the Disciplinary Barracks ; would have agreed to a farm furlough if offered it; sentenced to 25 years in prison, reduced to 1.5 years
