Biography
Paul Kleinsasser was a Hutterite conscientious objector from South Dakota imprisoned during World War I. Court-martialed for refusing military service, he was held at Fort Leavenworth. Sentenced to 5 years in prison, reduced to 1. (Documented in the Swarthmore College Peace Collection's World War I Conscientious Objectors database.) Archival note: registered for the draft on June 5, 1917 as a C.O.; sent to Camp Funston; refused combatant & noncombatant service & work; refused to wear uniform; placed in guardhouse; appeared before Bd. of Inquiry, which found him sincere; would have taken farm furlough, but it was not offered to him; …
