Biography

David Hofer, a Hutterite from the Rockport Colony in South Dakota, was one of four brothers-in-faith court-martialed in 1918 and sentenced to twenty years hard labor for refusing military service. Held at Alcatraz and Fort Leavenworth, he survived the ordeal that killed his brothers Joseph and Michael and was released soon after their deaths, giving the surviving testimony of their treatment.
