Biography

Gines Martinez was one of five Spanish sailors who deserted Franco's navy and sought asylum in the United States in July 1957. Held by the immigration service and ordered returned to Spain by a Los Angeles federal court, he and his comrades — defended by the ACLU and the Committee to Save the Five Spanish Sailors — fought their forced return.
