Biography

Phi Beta Kappa, magna cum laude Dartmouth economist (1939) who held senior posts at OPA, the War Production Board, and the Department of Commerce. In 1948 Elizabeth Bentley named him to HUAC as a Soviet source; in 1950 indicted for perjury for denying CPUSA membership. First conviction reversed; retried 1953 on two perjury counts; 3 years. Murdered in his cell at Lewisburg Federal Penitentiary in November 1954 by fellow inmates — frequently cited as one of the few homicides directly attributable to McCarthyism.
