William Anderson was a 19-year-old assistant secretary of the Greenville, South Carolina NAACP branch and head of its youth council, arrested on a fabricated charge (using a school telephone to call a white girl), convicted, and sentenced to thirty days on the chain gang plus a $100 fine and $5,000 bond, amid a wave of Klan terror in Greenville.
