Biography

Medgar Evers was the NAACP field secretary for Mississippi and the state's foremost civil-rights organizer. In 1960 he was cited for contempt of court for publicly calling a court sentencing a 'gross miscarriage of justice' — a prosecution aimed at silencing his criticism of Mississippi's segregated courts. He was assassinated in 1963.
