Biography

Patricia Gloria Stephens Due, a Florida A&M student and CORE organizer, was arrested during the February 20, 1960 Woolworth sit-in in Tallahassee. After her March 17 conviction, she and seven other protesters chose jail rather than paying fines. Due entered Leon County Jail in March and was released on May 5, 1960, after serving 49 days of a 60-day sentence. Her account of the imprisonment, commonly known as "Letter from Leon County Jail," became an important document of the student civil-rights movement.

She was still Patricia Stephens at the time of the jail-in; Patricia Gloria Stephens Due is her canonical later name. Born December 9, 1939 in Quincy, Florida, she died on February 7, 2012 in Smyrna, Georgia. Florida Memory catalogs her jail letter as "Letter From A Jailed Student."
